Financial Information
For the 2009-2010 academic year, fees have been assessed at $10,767.50 for three quarters. Non-resident tuition for out-of-state residents and international students is $14,694 for three quarters (Registration fees and Non-resident tuition are subject to change). State residency can be established after living in California for one continuous year. Once residency is established, a student is exempt from non-resident tuition and pays only fees (does not apply to international students).
Financial Assistance
The Department offers a number of fellowships to incoming students. Fellowship packages normally grant four or five years of funding (with various combinations of fellowships and teaching assistantships). To maintain their support packages from year to year, students must show satisfactory progress in the graduate program.
We highly recommend that all applicants apply for other forms of financial assistance:
Those who begin the program without fellowship packages are eligible to apply for research assistantships through an individual faculty member. Graduate students may also serve as paid Readers for undergraduate lecture courses. Readers are responsible for grading a portion of student papers and exams.
Teaching assistantships are not available to first-year graduate students. Students can apply during Winter quarter of their first year for teaching assistantships effective the following year.
In addition to these departmental awards, we strongly encourage students to apply for external awards such as Fulbright, Ford, etc. More information on external fellowships can be found on the Graduate Division website: http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/stusup/index.html.
Student loan information can be obtained from the UCLA Financial Aid Office: http://www.fao.ucla.edu/.
