Europe, Prolonged contact of Europe with the non-European world

Research Interests

Anthony Pagden has a joint appointment in the departments of History and Political Science. Born in England, raised in Chile, and Spain, he took his D.Phil. from Oxford University. His main area of research have been the prolonged contact of Europe with the non-European world. He has also written on the history of law, anthropology and of modern Spanish America, and the how to think,and not to think, about the history of ideas. He has published a dozen books, which have been translated into several European and Asian languages, most recently Worlds at War The 2500 year struggle between East and West . Peoples and Empires. Europeans and the Rest of the World , from Antiquity to the Present: La Ilustración y sus enemigos. Dos ensayos sobre los orígenes de la modernidad, and as editor, The Idea of Europe From Antiquity to the European Union. He has also written for The Times Literary Supplement, The London Review of Books, The New York Times,The Los Angeles Times The New Republic The National Interest and Il Sole 24 Ore.
