Advising
The Department of History has a graduate advisor, Hadley Porter (hadick@history.ucla.edu), and a graduate counselor, Lindsay Aydelott (aydelott@history.ucla.edu ). Their office is located in Bunche 6290. Faculty advisors should advise regarding language requirements, research topics and anything related to academics. At the bureaucratic end, the staff advisors maintain and update permanent and awards files, gather information and keep updated lists of TA appointments, submit names of doctoral committees to the Graduate Division, process Leaves of Absence, process paperwork for awards, and write letters of introduction for research abroad. Both advisors work on the admissions and awards files.
The Graduate History Office hours are:
M 8-5
T 8-5
W 8-5
R 8-5
F 8-5
Students are encouraged to set up appointments to discuss program related problems as well as other concerns.
Students are expected to check e-mail on a regular basis as the Department has approximately 250 students and much of the communication takes place through e-mail (policy changes, job openings, reminder of deadlines, etc.).
