Application Procedure
The deadline for application is December 15. All admitted students are expected to enroll the following fall. Deferred enrollment is not permitted. Before submitting the various parts of the application to the Department of History and the Graduate Division, please read all forms and instructions carefully.
All applicants must apply electronically for graduate admission and financial aid. This may be done at https://www.gradadmissions.ucla.edu/newapp/. The Graduate Division Online Application will also guide applicants through a supplementary online History Department application. Applicants must mail transcripts and letters of recommendation to the Department. To apply electronically, return to the History Graduate Admissions home page and click on the bar at the bottom of the screen marked "Graduate Division."
You must send the following materials directly to the department
- Three sealed letters of recommendation from faculty members. The cover sheet printed from the online application must be attached to the actual letter of recommendation.
- A writing sample of no longer than 10 pages.
- The Statement of Purpose (should not exceed two pages, double spaced).
- Two official sealed transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended.
The Department must also receive:
- Each applicant's general knowledge GRE scores. GRE scores must be sent directly to the Department of History from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The last date to take the paper-based GRE is the October before the application deadline. Please consult the GRE booklet for computer-based test dates. Scores from tests taken in December will not meet the December 15 deadline for submitting a completed file. The GRE codes to select are 4837 (UCLA) and 2799 (History).
It is the applicant's responsibility to check with people who have written the letters of recommendation to make sure that they are submitted by the deadline. You must visit this website (click here) during your application process to check the status of your application and the receipt of any required supporting documents. Files that remain incomplete will not be reviewed by the admissions committee.
