The Department of History's commitment to historical understanding is exemplified in its diverse faculty. This core consists of some 73 permanent faculty members with varied academic backgrounds and research interests, many of which cross specific field and disciplinary boundaries. The department also includes emeriti faculty members -- some of whom teach on recall, many of whom retain active research agendas -- as well as visiting lecturers and scholars who bring in special expertise from many areas of study. Diversity continues to be represented in the graduate students and staff members. Graduate students come from all over the world. They bring a strong desire to become experts in their fields of study. Staff members combine many years of employment at UCLA, and provide professional support to faculty and students. |

The UCLA Department of History believes that history is more than the study of the past. It is also an indispensable tool for understanding the present.
New Clusters
Alongside our existing 14 sub-fields, the History Department is introducing this year three new inter-field clusters, which are intended to attract students and faculty to innovative new themes and current in the historical discipline.
