Murat is currently completing his dissertation, "Strengthening Male Bodies and Building Robust Communities: Physical Culture in the Late Ottoman Empire," as a Mellon-CES Fellow. His dissertation analyzes the relationship between male subject formation, corporeal reform, nation building, and communal and imperial identity. Specifically, it focuses on the development of a shared sports culture among upper and middle-class Muslims, Christians, and Jews of Istanbul during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
