Friends of History
The History Department of UCLA is one of the leading academic units in the College of Letters and Science. Our programs are widely recognized as among the best in the country for the study of History. The Friends of History is dedicated to the support of outstanding scholarship and teaching. To this end, the Friends assists the department in several areas: the funding of graduate fellowships, the underwriting of faculty and student research, and the sharing of our academic programs with the Los Angeles Community.
The Friends of History offers a unique opportunity to participate in intellectual discussions in an informal atmosphere. Friends will meet periodically in different homes. Distinguished History Department faculty members will present a variety of vital topics and lead stimulating discussions.
Our scheduled speakers for this year include:
November 19, 2008: Daniel Howe, "What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848"
January 14, 2009: Nile Green, "Muslim Travelers to the West and the Transformation of Islamic Societies"
March 11, 2009: Robert Hill, "Imposters, Real and Imagined"
May 13, 2009: Lynn Hunt, "Inventing Human Rights"
