Dear History Bruins and Other Members of the History Department Community:

I write to request your yearly membership renewal in the History Bruins and to invite you to attend and participate in three special programs at the James West Alumni Center on the UCLA campus:

• On November 7th at 7:30 p.m., Professor Lynn Hunt will present "Is Time Historical?”

• On March 13, 2006 at 7:30 p.m., Professor Arch Getty will present “Stalin as Mafia Godfather”

• On May 15, 2006 at 7:30 p.m., Professor Robert Frank will present a lecture on a History of Medicine topic

* * * Please RSVP to Nancy Dennis at Dennis@history.ucla.edu or (310) 206-9043. * * *

Renewing your membership today will assist the History Department in funding undergraduate research projects and support the Department’s efforts to continue to thrive in our reduced budget situation. By making small grants available to students who undertake independent projects, the Department can encourage more students to write senior theses. Such projects expose students to the most rewarding (and demanding) aspects of historical training, and they also enable students to work closely with a faculty mentor. This is a special gift to students in a department serving over 1500 undergraduates.

“A professor can never better distinguish himself in his work than by encouraging a clever pupil, for the true discoverers are among them, as comets amongst the stars.” Linnaeus

To continue this program, we have set a goal of raising $8,000 this year. To meet our goal, we will need all our current members to increase their membership donations. (Regular memberships remain at $25). We hope that you will consider upgrading to a Silver ($50), Gold ($100), or Platinum ($250) membership.

Finally, I encourage you to contribute your voice and energy to the History Bruins. By participating on the Board of Directors, you can vote on how funds are allocated, assist on program and website development, build fundraising, public relations and leadership skills and create new benefits for the History Bruin membership. If you are interested in seeing the History Bruins grow, please contact the History Bruins’ President, Sandy Turrow, at sandytu7@aol.com to attend the next Board meeting.

Warmly,

Edward A. Alpers
