Alice Kiwako Ashiwa is a Ph.D. student specializing in Japanese postwar art and visual culture.

She holds a B.A. from Oberlin College in Anthropology and an M.A. in Modern and Contemproary Art History from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a thesis titled  "Making of Art Spaces in Post-WWII Tokyo: The Case of the Sogetsu Art Center." Her research focuses on the development of art spaces (museusms, rental galleries, alternative spaces, etc) in 1960s Tokyo.
